The Great Kaikōura Whale Count 2026

Proud sponsors of The Great Kaikōura Whale Count 2026 and Ashlin's six-week internship, supporting marine research, conservation, and community engagement.

The whales that migrate past Kaikōura each winter are one of the region's most spectacular natural wonders. That's why we're excited to support The Great Kaikōura Whale Count 2026 and marine science student Ashlin through a six-week internship during this year's event.

Meet Ashlin

Ashlin is currently completing her Master's degree in Ecology at the University of Canterbury, where she is researching New Zealand Fur Seals. Originally from Greymouth, she completed her undergraduate studies in Ecology and Marine Science at the University of Otago before moving to Christchurch for postgraduate study.

Ashlin joins the Great Kaikōura Whale Count team in 2026 to gain hands-on experience in marine mammal research, expanding her knowledge from seals to whales. We are thrilled to help support the next generation of marine scientists and conservation leaders.

What is The Great Kaikōura Whale Count?

The Great Kaikōura Whale Count is an annual community event that celebrates the whales that migrate past our coastline while gathering valuable scientific data. Led by the Kaikōura Ocean Research Institute (KORI), the project brings together locals, visitors, students, researchers, and marine enthusiasts to monitor whale activity and contribute to long-term conservation efforts.

The event aims to strengthen our community's connection with the ocean and inspire people to become active guardians of the marine environment.

Why Kaikōura?

Every winter, Kaikōura becomes one of the best land-based whale watching locations in New Zealand. As whales migrate between Antarctic feeding grounds and warmer tropical waters, our coastline provides an incredible opportunity to observe these ocean giants.

Participants may spot humpback whales, sperm whales, southern right whales, orca, and other marine species travelling along the coast.

Supporting Conservation Through Connection

At Kaikōura Kayaks, conservation is at the heart of what we do. As New Zealand's only kayaking operator holding a Department of Conservation permit to view whales, dolphins, and seals on guided tours, we understand the importance of responsible wildlife encounters and protecting the marine environment for future generations.

By supporting initiatives like The Great Kaikōura Whale Count, we're helping build a stronger understanding of the species that make Kaikōura one of the world's most remarkable marine destinations.

How You Can Get Involved

The whale count is open to everyone.

Volunteers simply commit to a two-hour shift at the Kaikōura Peninsula monitoring station, helping researchers observe and record whale sightings. Shifts operate daily between 10:00am and 4:00pm throughout June.

No previous experience is required, and training is provided. Whether you're a local resident, a visitor, or simply someone who loves the ocean, your participation helps contribute valuable information to ongoing whale research.

You can express your interest here- The Great Kaikōura Whale Count Facebook Page and learn more through KORI (Kaikōura Ocean Research Institute).

Join Us This June

Whether you're volunteering for the whale count, joining a wildlife kayak tour, or simply spending time on the peninsula watching the migration unfold, June is one of the most exciting times of year to experience Kaikōura's marine environment.

Together, we can celebrate, protect, and learn more about the magnificent whales that pass our shores.

We look forward to seeing you out there.
