The Inland Road - Route 70 (Christchurch to Kaikoura) is open 24/7 with unrestricted access both ways and is the guaranteed way to reach Kaikoura.
To access the Inland Road route 70 from Christchurch turn left off SH1 on to SH7 (Alpine Pacific Triangle) at Waipara North of Christchurch.
Average journey times from Christchurch to Kaikoura on the Inland Route 70 are three to three and a half hours, delays can occur due to road works increasing the travel time.
SH1 from Christchurch to Kaikoura (South) has reopened on the 2nd of June from 7am to 6pm daily, Friday, Saturday and Monday to all traffic.
SH1 South of Kaikoura will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with convoy's for locals only at 7am and 6pm.
Road users will need to use the Waiau/ Mt Lyford Inland Route 70 during the weekday closure times and overnight when the state highway is closed.

Travel time is approximately 2.5- 3 hours but delays can occur due to road works, please take this into consideration.
Intercity Group ( Bus Service ) have reinstated their return coach service between Christchurch-Kaikoura.
Departs Christchurch 7:00 am - Arrives Kaikoura 9:40 am
Departs Kaikoura 3:50 pm - Arrives Christchurch 6:25 pm
Please note, departure times make it possible to book a 12:30 pm "Seal Kayaking" tour on a day trip to Kaikoura.
We will drop you at the Bus Stop at 3:30 pm afterwards to connect back to Christchurch.
If traveling from Picton to Kaikoura please use the alternative Picton-Blenheim (SH63), St Arnaud-Murchison (SH6), Lewis Pass (SH65 and SH7), Hanmer Springs (SH7a) then Waiau and on to the Inland Road - Route 70.
The majority of the accommodation, restaurants, bars and shops in Kaikoura are open, its business as usual.
